私の作品名は「私は初めてみた光を覚えていない / I can’t recall my first light.」。

“I can’t recall my first light”

For the final two years of his life, my grandfather was bedridden. With my camera, I captured his eyes every single day until the day he passed away. He slowly lost his ability to talk, and so it was the only way for me, being a photographer, to communicate with him. During his last days, he murmured that he was ready to go. Day by day, as if he were being freed from his burdens, his eyes became clearer and more beautiful, only reflecting light as he could no longer see anything.

As I gazed into the eyes of a man who was making his final journey, I became curious about the eyes of newborns when they opened their eyes for the first time in their life. Ever since then, I have witnessed the birth of more than twenty babies and have been capturing the moment of when they first open their eyes. Their eyes have probably only sensed the light, but they are surely desperate to be opened and see the world.

It is not in my memory anymore, but there must have been that moment for me, too, when I tried to open my eyes in order to start living in this world.

Eventually, there may come a time when I cannot see anything, just as my grandfather experienced.
Until that time comes, I want to see and appreciate the light.
